1. the complexity of the world constantly increases. today, simplicity and comprehensibility are the criteria for luxury.
2. the internet: blessing or curse. fast communication and comprehensive information around the clock. but what's the price for it: spam and viruses.
3. the solution: the aonVirenchecker. developed from the antivirus experts ikarus with the interaction design of GP. complex virus defense — at long last simple.
simple and clear installation
giving the user a secure feeling right from the start was our goal for the aonVirenchecker installation. by letting him know how many steps are ahead of him and if he has to restart the computer or install further components. and by running a first scan of the computer during the installation to make sure it isn't already infected.
another question we ran into was: why should we force the user to launch the application after installation — only to set it up? especially virus utilities are usually running invisible in the background waiting to catch a virus. therefor there is really no need to ever manually launch the application — neither after the installation nor on a regular basis. we integrated the setup of aonVirenchecker in the last part of the installation, some might call it the first part of the application. here one can change the settings for permanent protection in the background, e.g. monitoring the system and emails for virus, activating dialer- and spyware-guard.
all set. no need to look for the application and launch. aonVirenchecker is already protecting your system and lets you deal with more important stuff — work :-)
secure and unobtrusive
while you are working, aonVirenchecker does its job in the background. but how do you know that everything is fine? — you do not need to open the application. instead, a small icon in the task bar, a so called tray icon, shows you discreetly, but always visible, the current state of your system. it lets you know wether:
- everything is alright: the icon is just white
- aonVirenchecker is downloading the newest information on viruses: the icon is »breathing«
- aonVirenchecker runs a scheduled scan in the background: the icon is green and rotating, once a virus is found the icon will turn red
- aonVirenchecker found a virus: the icon is red
- aonVirenchecker is set up in a way that your system might be jeopardized, e.g. the update wasn't possible because something was wrong with your connection to the internet: the center of the icon is red
don't worry, you do not have to monitor the tray icon all the time. as soon as something important happens a small information-bubble opens and tells you, in plain words, what happened and what you can do in order to solve the situation. and, rest assured, this isn't one of those annoying »never get away«-bubbles — once you have seen it, it will only bug you again if your system is really at risk.
by mouse-clicking on the tray icon the information-bubble also shows up with a summary of the current state: last update on the virus information, last scan and the level of virus protection. by clicking on one of the buttons in the bubble you can even open the application window directly in the chosen section.
but what happens if a virus was found?
virus alarm
so, you got one of those ugly viruses. nothing to worry about. aonVirenchecker has already put it into quarantine, to prevent further harm to your system. after a scan and virus find the quarantine opens and gives you additional details for the viruses it caught. but it doesn't stop here. in our user research we learned that most users don't know what to do, once a virus is found. with sophisticated viruses these days it is often not sufficient to just delete the infected file, the whole computer has to be rectified. hence, we proposed a recommendation system to support the user in getting rid of the virus. this wasn't an easy task for the software engineers at ikarus, but they succeeded and now the user — you — will always be in control of the system.
the application window, at last
aonVirenchecker is protecting your system in the background, so there is rarely the need to open the application window itself. but, there are the odd moments where one isn't entirely sure wether everything is ok, and double checking is always better. so, let's run a scan of the whole system. the application window is an expanded version of the information-bubble. the buttons to navigate to the different sections additionally show always the current status and signal you if something is wrong — you easily get an overview of your system at a glance.
scanning the system takes its time, therefore estimated times for the different scans support you in your decision of what to scan. and while waiting for the scan to be finished aonVirenchecker entertains you with a lovely animation :)

»GP designpartners impressively transferred our complex requirements of a locally installed virus scanner into an interface which is user friendly, hence easy to understand, configure and use. the intuitive interface guarantees the maximum possible security and reduces the risks of insufficient and inadequate user settings — above all for the lesser experienced users. this and the thorough implementation of the whole concept totally convinced us.«
»almost no day without virus- or spyware-warnings in the media — this makes the user anxious. therefore it's important to convey the user that his system is protected — the right information at the right time. invisble secure, without annoyance. once a virus is found most anti-virus applications leave the users alone with many questions: how can i get rid of the virus? is it better to delete this file? ... the aonVirenchecker offers contextual recommendations, so that the user is always in control of the situation.«
